Did you know that going to the movies during the Christmas holidays, particularly on Christmas Day, is considered an American tradition? “Traffic is very strong on Christmas Day, particularly after 3 or 4 p.m. as family things wrap up and people start coming out,” says Sun Dee Larson, spokeswoman for the AMC theater chain, which operates more than 5,000 screens in 30 states. According to Patrick Corcoran, vice president and chief communications officer for the National Association of Theater Owners, people going to the movies on Christmas Day or during the holiday week, “It’s become a real tradition for people.”
- A recent Fandango survey that suggested the core group of people aged 18 to 34 planned on seeing at least two movies during the holiday week.
- On average, the week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve equates to between $400 million and $600 million in ticket sales, according to data from Comscore.
- The closing of other businesses creates a vacuum. Few stores are open and diversions are hard to come by, making a trip to the movies one of the only ways families can congregate somewhere other than home during a holiday break.
